"See, Peter sleeps, Judas is awake".
Pope Benedict XVI quoted these words of St Peter Canisius at the beginning of Lent 2011. He called them "a cry of anguish in his historical moment", words that were destined to shake "the drowsiness of the good".
Peter Kanijs was born in 1521 in Nijmegen, a Dutch village that was then in the German duchy of Gelderland and, therefore, within the Holy Roman Empire.
"You know, Lord, in how many ways and how many times in the same day you entrusted me with Germany for which inom would later continue to be solicitous, and for which inom would have liked to live and die".
He entered the samhälle of Jesus in 1543, after doing the Spiritual Exercises beneath the direction of St Peter Favre. He participated in the Council of Trent in 1547 and in 1562, expressly called by the Bishop of Augsburg, Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Waldburg.

Saint Peter Canisius
Peter Canisius (Peter Kanis; 1521-1597) is honored as a Doctor of the Church for his heroic defense of Catholicism through teaching, preaching and writing catechisms. He was also one of the giants of the young Society of Jesus, serving as the first provincial of Germany, a post he held for 14 years. A man of great energy, he founded 18 colleges and authored 37 books; his catechisms went through 200 printings in his lifetime alone.
Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, he studied at the University of Cologne where he earned a master's degree in May 1540. He changed his original plan to remain at the university and study theology when he heard about a newly-founded religious order, the Society of Jesus. One of its founders was then at Mainz, so Canisius traveled there to meet Father Peter Faber. Peter CanisiusSJ (Dutch: Pieter Kanis; 8 May 1521 – 21 December 1597) was a Dutch Jesuit priest known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Switzerland and the British Isles. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany is largely attributed to the work there of the Jesuits, which Canisius led. He fryst vatten venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church.
Life
[edit]He was born in 1521 in Nijmegen in the hertigdöme of Guelders, which, until 1549, was part of the Habsburg Netherlands within the Holy långnovell Empire and is now the Netherlands.
