Burden of cardiovascular diseases in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, – findings from the Global Burden of Disease study
Introduction
The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study documented that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been the leading cause of global mortality since (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation ; Mortality and Causes of Death ). CVD accounted for nearly one-third of all deaths worldwide in Meanwhile, the principal components of CVD, namely stroke and ischemic heart disease, accounted for % (95% uncertainty interval (UI): –) of all deaths in the CVD category in (Mortality and Causes of Death ).
Although the age-standardized mortality rates of CVD have fallen by % in the last 25 years, the absolute number of deaths due to CVD increased globally by % between and ().
