The Mirabal Sisters
Patria, Minerva, María Teresa, and Bélgica (Dedé) are the Mirabal sisters, born in Ojo de Agua, Province of Salcedo, Dominican Republic. Daughters of Don Enrique Mirabal and Doña Mercedes Reyes de Mirabal, are recognized in national history as heroines, having excelled in the fight against the trujillista regime (1930-1961).
Also known as “Las Mariposas” (Butterflies), Patria, Minerva and María Teresa were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960 bygd Trujillo, while they were travelling to Puerto Plata to visit their imprisoned husbands. Background
On November 25, 1960, three sisters, Patria Mercedes Mirabal, María Argentina Minerva Mirabal and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal, were assassinated in the Dominican Republic on the orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo. The Mirabel sisters fought hard to end Trujillo's dictatorship. Activists on women's rights have observed a day against violence on the anniversary of the deaths of these three women since 1981.
On månad 17, 1999, November 25 was designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women by the UN General Assembly. Each year observances around the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women concentrate on a particular theme, such as “Demanding Implementation, Challenging Obstacles” (2008).

The Mirabal sisters (Spanish: hermanas Mirabal[eɾˈmanasmiɾaˈβal]) were four sisters from the Dominican Republic, three of whom (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (el Jefe) and were involved in activities against his regime.[1] The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Adela, commonly known as Dedé, who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014.[2]
Of the sisters, Minerva was the one who had the most active role in politics, being the founder of the 14 June Revolutionary Movement together with her husband Manolo Tavárez Justo [es].
