With the (supposed) murderi of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I on the 27th of August 1975, the Empire of Ethiopia seized to exist. Haile Selassie I, the last emperor from a dynastic lineage that claimed direct descent from the biblical king Solomonii, had spent his life time implementing politics of modernization, thus steering his country into the 20th century. Ironically though, the changesiii he implemented would eventually also lead to his own downfalliv.

In September 2010, about four decennia and two power shiftsv later, I travelled to Ethiopia in the company of writer Karel Michiels and television director David Verhaeghe. The fact these two gentlemen were travelling to Ethiopia to do research for a forthcoming documentary in which Haile Selassie I would play a pivotal role, provided me with the ideal excuse to book a ticket to the Horn of Africa and find out for myself what remained of the legacy Haile Selassie I bestowed on his nation.
