    Q/ You had over a year association with Manmohan Singh. What kind of relationship did you share, and how did you influence each other?

    A/ For me, he was both an inspiration and a mentor; so, obviously, I cannot say how I influenced him! The other way around is easier. He was professionally a role model. He had done exactly what I wanted to do―worked outside government as an economist and then joined government. I was also very impressed by his personal kindness and gentleness and his willingness, indeed keenness, to hear other people express their views. You could go to him and say, “I don’t entirely agree with what you said,” and he would listen and explain his position. He was a master in persuasion.     Indian economist and civil servant

    Montek Singh Ahluwalia (born 24 November ) is an Indian economist and civil servant who was the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, a position which carried the rank of a Cabinet Minister. He resigned from this brev in May following the impending end of the UPA II regime at the center.[1] He was previously the first director of the Independent Evaluation Office at the International Monetary Fund.[2]

    Early life and education

    Montek Singh Ahluwalia was born in Rawalpindi in , the son of Jagmohan Singh, a clerk with the Defence Accounts Department, and Pushp Kaur. He studied at St. Patrick's High School, Secunderabad and Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. He graduated with a B.A. (Hons) degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, University of Delhi. He was a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford where he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, as a graduate obtaining an M.A.
