Avet Terterian&#;s () seven symphonies are gradually becoming available on disc in the west. Although this recording is five years old it is new to me. Recently his final symphonies have been recorded, perhaps part of a projected complete cycle.
TERROR. When I was a young listener, in the early sometimes random and serendipitous discovery phase of music, I was given a 78 rpm set of Stravinsky&#;s The Firebird Suite. In the middle of one side, amid the dance of the maidens, the Ogre who has them imprisoned, leaps in upon them in a sudden crash of sound. The first time I heard it, I actually leapt from the bed in terror. I was amazed that a composer would dare such a thing. Not long after I discovered Bartok&#;s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste, which also has an abrupt dynamic explosion.

Alfred Roubenovich Terterian (by passport), Avet Terterian (in his biography as a composer) was born on July 29, in Baku, Azerbaijan. His parents were not professional musicians, but both of them had beautiful voices and had some training which allowed his father to perform as an opera singer, and his mother to appear in concert performances. The father, Rouben Terterian, a graduate of medical department of the Saratov University, was known in Baku as a practicing physician &#; laringologist. ‘Avet Terteryan was born into a family enthusiastic about music. In Avet Terteryan enrolled at the Music Academy in Baku. In he continued his studies at the Romanos Melikyan Music Academy. From he studied composition with Eduard Mirsoyan at the State Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan.
Alongside his activity as a free-lance composer, he occupied a number of official offices. From to he was Executive Secretary of the Armenian Composers’ Union. Between and Terteryan served as Chairman of the Music Department at the Armenian Cultural Ministry. In he accepted a professorship at the Yerevan Conservatory. In he received a stipend of the Province of Brandenburg and worked in Wiepersdorf for six months.
