INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) — The founder and board chair of Indianapolis-based Christel House International has died. Christel DeHaan, who established the nonprofit more than two decades ago, is being remembered for her work to help impoverished children throughout the world. She was 77.
DeHann founded Christel House International in 1998 after a successful business career as the co-founder of Resort Condominiums International. Christel House says it now serves nearly 6,000 students and graduates through schools in India, Jamaica, Mexico, South Africa and the U.S.

My wife, Monika, and I stepped off the ferry, its U.S. flag snapping to attention in the Lake Huron wind, and watched as our luggage was hoisted aboard a horse-drawn wagon. We clambered onto a wooden bench as a young man in suspenders and newsboy cap snapped the reins. Off we headed down Main Street to the sunrise side of the island less than one-half mile away.
