On Monday, Curtis Jackson, better known as rapper 50 Cent, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following a messy lawsuit in which he was forced to pay his rival Rick Ross' ex-girlfriend $5 million.
The news came as a shock, especially considering the rapper was just ranked No. 4 on Forbes' May list of the wealthiest hip-hop artists thanks to his reported $ million net worth. His massive deal with Vitamin Water alone awarded him between $60 million and $ million.

G-Unit (short for Gorilla-Unit)[1] was an American hip hop group formed by longtime friends and East Coastrappers50 Cent, Tony Yayo, and Lloyd Banks. After amassing a string of self-released mixtapes in the early s, the group released their debut album Beg for Mercy in , which went on to ship over four million copies in the US and was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of amerika (RIAA).

Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, ),[3] known professionally as 50 Cent,[n 1] is an American rapper, actor, and television producer. Born in South Jamaica, a neighborhood of Queens, Jackson began pursuing a musical career in In –, he recorded his debut album Power of the Dollar for Columbia Records; however, he was struck by nine bullets during a shooting in May , causing its release to be cancelled and Jackson to be dropped from the label. His mixtape, Guess Who's Back? was discovered by Detroit rapper Eminem, who signed Jackson to his label Shady Records, an imprint of Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records that same year.[5][6]
