  • Gampopa’s Life Story

Gampopa Sönam Rinchen ( སྒམ་པོ་པ་བསོད་ནམས་རིན་ཆེན་) (1079-1153/9) was born in Nyal in Central Tibet. He first trained as a doctor, hence his name Dakpo Lharje (དྭགས་པོ་ལྷ་རྗེ་) – the Physician of Dakpo (Dakpo is the province where He spent many years). After Gampopa’s two children and wife died in an epidemic, He took ordination as a monk at the age of 26.

After studying and practising the Kadampa teachings of Atisha, at the age of 32 He met His teacher Jetsün Milarepa. Gampopa’s own disciples included the first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa(1110-1193) and Phagmodrupa Dorje Gyalpo (1110-1170).

Although He is one of the most important figures in the Kagyu lineage, in 1994, no biography of Gampopa’s life was available in English. So Rinpoche gave a teaching directly translated from Gampopa’s Tibetan biography.

After a discussion with those present in the Kagyu Samye Ling Temple, Rinpoche begins to tell Gampopa’s Life Story

Throughout history, Buddhism has spread and gained believers through cultural exchanges and interaction. Assisting in Buddhism's popularization and development since ancient times in Japan were venerated institutions and centers of higher learning which are comparable to today's universities, for example, Tendai Buddhism had Mt. Hiei and Shingon Buddhism had Mt. Koya.

In continuing with this historical process, Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai has established the Numata Program in Buddhist Studies program at leading universities in North America and europe as one of its main projects to promote and introduce Buddhism to the world. The first "Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies" was established at the University of California, Berkeley in January, 1984, and since that time, the program has grown to include 17 major universities in North America and europe.

    Father Harry Williams (1919–2006)

Father Harry Williams was a priest, teacher and monk who came to be regarded as one of the outstanding Anglican theologians of his day. He was one of the group of theologians, commonly associated with Cambridge, whose discontent with traditional methods of Christian teaching and preaching found röst among the post-war generation in a call for a reform more radical than any mere “restatement” of accepted Christian standards in faith and morals. Apart from that “rogue elephant” Bishop John Robinson, Williams was perhaps the most controversial and widely influential figure in the group. Along with Michael Ramsey, Alan Ecclestone, W. H. Vanstone and Rowan Williams, Father Williams was one of the very few outstanding Anglican theologians of the post-war years.
