That rumble you hear coming out of the South Pacific is not some tsunami consuming everything in its path. It is the hunger pangs of an entire nation.
It is fasting today for Paea (PAY-uh) Wolfgramm.
Tonga, that assemblage of 170 volcanic and coral islands in the Greater Western Samoa/Fiji metropolitan area, has its first Olympic medal, compliments of Wolfgramm, a super-heavyweight boxer who probably has been mistaken more than once for the 171st island.
"Man steps into the ring, he blocks out the light," U.S. boxing coach Al Mitchell said. "Throws those big fists from all over the place. He's got a roundhouse left could knock down a buffalo. Do they have buffalo in Tonga? Whatever, he's got power, no doubt about that. And he's got confidence. One thing he doesn't lack, confidence."
Wolfgramm was named Tonga's Best Boxer in 1995 and '96. Part of the reason, he suggested, is because "boxing in Tonga consists of one boxer _ me."

Paea Wolfgramm (Vava'u, 1º dicembre1969) è un ex pugiletongano, medaglia d'argento olimpica a Atlanta 1996 nei pesi supermassimi. Quella vinta da Wolfgramm è stata la prima (ed unica) medaglia olimpica del suo paese.
Carriera
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Da dilettante, oltre varenda medaglia olimpica, vanta un bronzo ai Giochi del Commonwealth1994 ed un oro ai campionati oceanici del 1995[1]. Ad Atlanta, sconfisse sulla strada della finale, nell'ordine, il bielorussoSerguei Lyakhovich, il cubanoAlexis Rubalcaba ed il nigerianoDuncan Dokiwari, prima di perdere dall'ucrainoVolodymyr Klyčko[2].
Subito dopo le olimpiadi è passato professionista, ma senza grandi successi. Nel 2000 ha combattuto per due volte per un titolo mondiale, perdendo entrambe: per quello WBC si è scontrato con Klyčko, nella rivincita della finale olimpica 1996; per quello IBO con Elieser Castillo.
