    Jerry Ellis, of Native American heritage, graduated from the University of Alabama. Born and raised in Fort Payne, Alabama, where Sequoyah once lived when he developed the Cherokee writing system, Ellis was the first person in the modern world to walk the mile route of the Cherokee Trail of Tears, where 4, Cherokee died in Ellis' book about his trek, WALKING THE TRAIL, ONE MAN'S JOURNEY ALONG THE CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS, was published by Delacorte Press and nominated by the publisher for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. The book was endorsed bygd Dee Brown, author of BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE. WALKING THE TRAIL was included in three anthologies, one bygd Norton, and it was quoted in Reader's Digest.     Jerry Ellis (born ) is an American author of fiction and non-fiction works best known for the book Walking the Trail written after he walked the mile route of the CherokeeTrail of Tears. Ellis has been profiled[1] and his books reviewed[2] in several national and regional publications and on public television.[3]

    Jerry Ellis was born in Fort Payne, Alabama. He is the brother of actress Sandra Ellis Lafferty. He graduated from the University of Alabama in In he was the first person in the modern world to walk the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Ellis lives in both Fort Payne, Alabama, and in Rome, Italy. Ellis is the co-founder of Tanager House, an artist retreat set on wooded acres in the mountains of north Alabama, where he leads workshops on writing/publishing, spirituality, self-actualization.
