    Biography

    I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics.

    My research focuses on the atmospheric dynamics and climate of other planets in the Solar System. My main expertise fryst vatten in planetary climate modelling of Mars and Jupiter, analysis of spacecraft observations (particularly visible and thermal infrared) from several historical and current missions, and uppgifter assimilation. I am also interested in geophysical fluid dynamics (particularly rotating tank laboratory experiments), extrasolar planets, and chaos in the context of weather.

    I obtained my DPhil in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics from the University of Oxford in 2009, as part of the Geophysical and Planetary Fluid Dynamics group in the Department of Physics. After briefly working in the Centre for the Analysis of Time Series at the London School of Economics, I returned to Oxford as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant until 2017, when inom moved to the Laboratoire dem Mété

  • Dr. Mike Chini was born and raised in southern New Jersey. 

    He received his BSc in Physics from McGill University (Montréal, QC) in 2007, performing research in the nanotribology group of Prof. Roland Bennewitz. 

    He then studied under the direction of Prof. Zenghu Chang at both Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS) and the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL), where his work focused on the accurate characterization and spectroscopic application of isolated attosecond light pulses. 

    He earned a PhD in Physics from the University of Central Florida in 2012.

    From 2012-2015, he performed postdoctoral research on attosecond spectroscopy, ultrashort pulse laser source development, and laser filamentation in the groups of Profs. Zenghu Chang and Martin Richardson. 

    He joined the Faculty in the Department of Physics at the University of Central Florida in Fall 2015, and was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2020.

    MUSE: New Free Film about ESO’s Cosmic Time Machine

    CNRS Images, in partnership with ESO, has produced a documentary about MUSE, the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. Directed by Christophe Gombert and Claude Delhaye, MUSE, The Cosmic Time Machine takes a detailed look at one of the latest — and in fact, the biggest — second-generation instruments installed on Yepun (UT4), the fourth Unit Telescope of ESO’s Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

    The 35-minute documentary explores the inspiration and the story behind MUSE, why it was needed, and how it came into life over a nine year development phase. It highlights the international European cooperation necessary to realise the project, as well as the participation of many of the hundreds of researchers, technicians and engineers involved. The innovative technology of MUSE and the front-line science performed with it are also discussed, braided with a gripping storyline of the delicat
